Course Title: Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program
Target Audience: Those wanting to pursue a career in pharmacy or other related industry.
Prerequisites: High School Diploma or GED. Student must complete the application process and be accepted into the program. In addition, student must pass a reading and math pre-assessment test. Proficiency with computers and computer and internet access is required due to the online component of this program.

Our Pharmacy Tech students are required to wear navy scrubs and white lab coats to class by the third week of the program. A basic handheld calculator is recommended.
Course Description: Earn professional credentials and specific job-related skills that are in-demand for immediate employment! This comprehensive 75 hour course will prepare you to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's PTCB exam. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. You will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. One class session will be spent touring a local hospital pharmacy and learning its operations. Textbook required and not included.
You are required to take the Healthcare Assessment Exam, which will be administered right after the Information Session. Be sure to complete the required healthcare application. Required textbooks are not included in course fee.
Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
Describe basic pharmacology.
Explain the duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician including law and ethical guidelines for practice.
Explain the classifications of drugs.
Discuss routes of administration, dosage forms, and drug dosages.
Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the human body.
Perform essential functions relating to inventory control and purchasing.
Describe procedures and techniques relating to aseptic technique, compounding, and parenteral dosage preparation.
Distinguish between trade and generic names of drugs and abbreviation used in pharmacy practice.
Explain the procedures and operations relating to the manufacturing, packaging, and labeling of drugs.
Teaching Methodology and Assessment - Lectures, discussions and hands-on exercises.
Assessment tools will include math quizzes, drug tests, chapter tests, and final exam.
Criteria for "Successful Completion" - To receive a Clayton State University Continuing and Professiona Education certificate and CEUs, you must attend 80% of all class sessions, actively participate and have a final average grade of 70% or above using the grading scale below:
Chapter Tests 40% of final grade
Math Quizzes 20% of final grade
Drug Tests 20% of final grade
Final Exam (Cumulative) 20% of final grade
Amount of contact time (in hours) needed to effectively teach this program: 75 hours
