Course Title: Medical Billing Specialist Certificate Program
Instructor: Deborah Coleman-Jenkins, MSA
Target Audience: Anyone who would like to gain entry into a career in the healthcare field.
Prerequisites: High School Diploma or equivalency and submission of healthcare application. You should be proficient in keyboarding, have a basic understanding of a word-processing computer program (Microsoft Word is recommended), and have a command of English grammar and punctuation. You must pass the healthcare assessment to be eligible for the program. The assessment will be given following the information Session. You are required to take the Healthcare Assessment Exam, which will be administered right after the information Session. You must pass the Healthcare Assessment with a 70 or better to be eligible for the program. Be sure to complete the required healthcare application.
Course Description: The Medical Billing Specialist Certification Program (MBS) will give you the skills you need to be competitive in the healthcare market. The MBS program includes legal, ethical and regulatory concepts including HIPPA compliance requirements, industry-specific techniques for filling insurance, and performing diagnostic and procedural coding tasks. Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
Display a working knowledge of Medical Terminology.
Describe the differences between Commerical, HMO/PPO, Federal and State insurance plans, including eligibility and coverage, preauthorization, certification and referrals as well as reimbursement methodologies.
Explain the legal and ethical responsibilities, including the HIPPA mandates, the rules for maintaining privacy of medical records and protected health information and the types of consents and disclosures that are required in a medical office environment.
Perform tasks associated with billing and reimbursement, including insurance and patient billing, payment processing and claims review, correction and appeals.
Perform traditional business office tasks for Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and bookkeeping maintenance.
Teaching Methodology and Assessment: Teaching methodology includes lecture, discussions power point presentations, real life experiences and case studies. Assessment will be based on discussion participation, homework assignments, module quizzes, midterm exam and final exam.
Criteria for Successful Completion: To receive a Clayton State University Center for Continuing Education certificate and CEU's, you must attend 80% of all class sessions, actively participate, and complete a course evaluation. In addition, you must complete all assignments and pass the quizzes, mid-term exam, and final exam with an average of 70 or above according to the criteria below. You will have (1) mid-term and (1) final exam at the end of the course and any other quizzes given by the instructor. The following criteria will be used to evaluate your performance using a standard quality of practical work.
