Course Title: Clinical Hemodialysis Technician Certificate Program (CER962)

Target Audience: Individuals who are interested in an entry level career in a hemodialysis.
Prerequisites (courses and/or assessment or tests): This course is intended for individuals who have obtained a high school diploma or GED and have an interest in a career in the hemodialysis arena. This course is beneficial for individuals who are preparing for NNCC's CCHT exam.

Equipment: Students must bring their own stethoscope, goggles or face shield, and navy scrubs for class and clinicals. These can be found reasonably priced at www.allheart.com

Course Description: Projections indicate increased demand for dialysis care in the coming years. More than 20 million adults have some form of chronic kidney disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By 2025, that number is expected to rise by 50%. The need for qualified trained technicians is also on the rise. You will learn how to monitor patients before, during and after dialysis treatment as well as how to maintain and operate the equipment used for dialysis. You will also learn techniques required to provide quality care for patients in a hemodialysis setting. This program is designed to prepare learners for the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission's Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician national exam. An externship is included. To be eligible for the program, you must submit an application with supporting documentation and pass the healthcare assessment exam. You are responsible for the textbook, stethoscope, scrubs, goggles or face shield which are required at first class. For the externship, you are responsible for a physical exam, immunization records, and personal health insurance which are required.
Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
Utilize aseptic techniques and standard precautions
Demonstrate how to perform and record physical measurements including weight and vital signs
Communicate understanding of basic body chemistry including fluid and electrolyte balance
Identify clinical manifestations of end-stage renal disease
Demonstrate proper handling of hazardous materials
Demonstrate the principles and skills necessary to competently perform as an entry-level dialysis technician
Communicate and interact as an effective member of the healthcare delivery team
Demonstrate effective critical thinking skills
Demonstrate quality patient care
Teaching Methodology and Assessment: A combination of the following teaching methodologies and assessments will be utilized throughout the hemodialysis course, in efforts to ensure educational goals and industry standards are being met: Lecture, discussions, power point presentations, real life experiences, case studies, Q and A, role play, quizzes, and exams.
Criteria for Successful Completion: To receive a Clayton State University Continuing Education Certificate and CEUs, you must attend 80% of the class sessions, actively participate and complete a course evaluation. (In addition) Exams will be administered and graded to assess your knowledge and skills demonstrations will be expected to demonstrate abilities. Passing the final assessment with a 75% or better will be an indicator of successful learning.
