Landing a publishing contract in mainstream or genre fiction is very different than writing for fun - or writing poetry, literary fiction, or non-fiction. While some of the same techniques apply, the rules and standards are very different and the industry is changing every day. This specialized, high-intensity class is designed to start moving you down the path toward publication by covering some of the most important skills and information you need to know. We will talk about various genre standards, define common publishing terms, address the basics of technical topics, and cover critical craft topics such as show-don't-tell. We will also discuss story progression, character development, and publishing requirements.
NOTE: This is not a workshop-style class. We won't be reviewing writing or working on manuscripts. While no books are required, we will provide a recommended reading list.
